Happy Sunday everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'm sure it was different than the ones we are used to, but there is still a lot to be thankful for.I hope the rain didn't dampen anyone's plans for outside activities. We were out on the screened porch which I now have covered with clear plastic sheeting. A little portable heater and that did the trick. The four of us were very comfortable. The weather has been beautiful the last three days. No snow in sight.
All the rooms in the house are being magically transformed to the Christmas theme. It takes about 4 days to complete it all. We literally have a tree in every room! Mrs. Mud's village is beautiful! This is my favorite time of the year! This week we will be starting Wonders Unit 3-week 1. We will be concentrating on folktales. The new spelling words are posted on the spelling page. In math, we are moving on to unit 3. The kids did a great job on their unit 2 assessments. Keep studying those 2's, 5's and 10's times tables. Unit 3 will focus on division and multiplication. In science, we continue our weather unit and in social studies we are about halfway through our Native American unit. Please don't forget that the Native American projects are due on Monday and Tuesday of this week. I can't wait to see all of the projects. The kids have learned so much so far about the Native Americans. For our Christmas parties, I would like to have a gift exchange for the kids. They will pick a name and then buy a present for that child. Please wrap the present and put to who it is for and leave who it is from blank. We will get three guesses at the parties to see if they can guess their giver. We will see who can keep a secret the longest! If the kids want to drop little hints or give little treats along the way, that even makes it more fun. Our parties will be held the 22nd and the 23rd. I will see what the kids want to do for food and drinks. Don't forget that Wednesday the 23rd will be an early release day. I will be in touch with more information on the parties. Please don't forget that this Friday, December 4th, is a no school day. There will be no zoom class. Have a great Sunday. Get out there and enjoy the beautiful weather. We are heading to Meredith for the afternoon. Enjoy the Pat's game at 1:00. Good morning everyone. I hope this Sunday finds you all healthy. What a beautiful weekend to get outdoors.
The exterior illumination for Christmas is finally finished. Now we will work on the inside. We will not be having our extended family from New York for this Thanksgiving, so we will be able to decorate starting Thanksgiving night. This will be a very short school week. I will see both cohorts for only one full day. Monday's cohort lucks out for a half a day on Wednesday too. Only cohort B will be bringing home work for Monday the 30th. In Wonders, we are working on Unit 2 week 5. It is all about poetry. In math, we will be taking our unit 2 test. The kids should be fully prepared for the test. Please keep them practicing their addition and subtraction facts and their 2's, 5's and 10's multiplication facts. Please remember that the Native American projects are due on November 30 and December 1st. The kids a great job researching the four areas of Native Americans that we are studying. They have learned so much so far. They have a better understanding of the roles that the Native Americans play in today's society. The kids know how to use Mackin- Via for research purposes, so they can do it at home also. Please don't forget to have the kids go on to ixl and to continue their reading counts tests at home. Our reading counts chart with all the stars is looking very good. The kids will all be coming home with a brand new dictionary. All of the third graders receive them. It is a project that the New Boston Grange does every year. There is a message attached to the dictionary that explains the project. The grange usually comes in for a big presentation, but unfortunately, they can't come into the school this year. The kids get so excited. They may keep them at home or use them in school. In this time of the year of family and friends, it is important that we take time to remember all the things that we are thankful for. I am so thankful that I can be in school with the kids in these unprecedented times. The kids have been amazing and I feel very lucky to be a part of their lives. I wish everyone a wonderful holiday. Whether you are alone or with family and friends, have the best Thanksgiving! Enjoy the Patriots game at 1:00 today. Let's see if they can get to be 5 and 5! Have a great rest of the weekend. Hey Everyone,
I hope you are all enjoying the weekend. There is a frost up here on the Mud Hill. Mrs. Mud just threatened to start bringing up the Christmas decorations. Her decorating is a week long process. I think I will be gone for the day! I already have the outside all decorated. This week will be a normal week. Well, normal in the sense that this is as normal as it gets for now! In Wonders, we will be working on Unit 2 week 4. The spelling words are posted on the spelling page. They are very tricky this week. We will have a test on Friday. In Math, we are working on division and multiplication. Remember this is just an introduction to both operations. The kids should be working on 2's, 5's and 10's multiplication facts. We are all working very hard at two step word problems involving all four operations. Please remember to check out "IXL". I have put some new skills in there. Also, please don't forget about Reading Counts tests. After 5 passed tests in a row the kids get to pick out a prize. Library books with red dots on the binder are all in Reading Counts. Most of our Wonders stories are on there also. In language arts, we are working very hard on remembering to capitalize proper nouns and the beginnings of sentences. The kids are doing a great job on their journals which is one of my favorite assignments. I have parents with kids in college who still share their journals together when the kids are home for the holidays. Please ask the kids about their Native American acrostics. They worked very hard on those. They make a fine November bulletin board. In science, we are working on a weather unit. We discuss the weather every morning and we will begin to talk about the different types of clouds. We are learning so much about Native Americans. We are almost finished with the Woodland Indians and we will next move onto the Plains Indians. It sounds like the kids have some good ideas about their projects. Remember they will be due on November 30th and December 1st. I have decided to set the projects up in the gym(after we share them in class) and that way classes can go down at their own convenience and view all the projects and social distance safely. I will be sending home a sheet with some resources that are available on the computer. The necessary passwords will be there for the kids. Mostly for research purposes. Remember that the 25th of November on Wednesday is an early dismissal. The kids will be dismissed at 12:00. Mud's Munchkins have been doing a great job. They come in the door in the morning and they are all smiles. I can see it in their eyes! ha ha. They have remained healthy and they are so good at following the rules. Keep up the good work so we will be able to remain in school. Have a great Sunday everyone. I am being called away to carry boxes up from the basement. Yikes! A late Patriot's game. Should be a good one though. Have a great week everyone. Happy weekend everyone.I hope you are all enjoying the warm weather. Looks like November, feels like August!
We had a great class on Friday. The kids were amazing. I love it when we can all get together for class on Friday. Remember we will have a spelling test this Friday on the words that are listed on this web site on the spelling page. We will finish up Unit 2-week 3 this week in Wonders. Our story is about voting. Very appropriate for this week. We have had lots of discussions on the presidential race and the Electoral College. I tried to keep it simple so the kids would have a basic understanding of the process. In math we are continuing our introduction to division. We start off by using arrays and drawing pictures. I always tell the kids to draw a picture if they are in doubt of how to solve a problem. We have started our Native American unit. The kids are very excited. They all belong to a certain group, and they all have Native American names. We made our shields and our Indian acrostics. It is a shame that we can't go to the Indian Museum in Warner this year. If you ever get the opportunity to go there, please visit. We have discussed the hands-on project that is due on November 30th. The kids seem very excited and most of them have great ideas. I will be sending out a letter this week as a reminder. Remember to have fun with it. It is not meant to stress anyone out! If you still need an idea, let me know. Again, there are some great ideas on google images for third grade Native American projects. I can't wait to see what the kids come up with. On Monday, we will be starting Art for our special. Don't forget to send back library books so the kids can get new ones. I have also entered some new skills in IXL. Please have the kids check it out and don't forget about reading counts. Please remember there is no school on Wednesday as we celebrate Veteran's day. Have a great Sunday and a wonderful weekend. Happy November everyone. My favorite time of the year! It is hard to believe that we are in the month of November and the year is almost over. Maybe that is a good thing?
Up here on the Mud Hill, we have winter on one side of the yard and fall on the other! I didn't even get a chance to blow out all of the leaves before the snow came. Once the snow falls on the Mud Hill, it stays until June! Ha ha. It was great seeing the kids last night. Thank you to all who came up and social distanced in the driveway. It was great meeting a lot of you for the first time too. The kids were all so excited and happy. Halloween is one of the favorite holidays of the kids. Also, thank you so much Mrs. Johnson and cohort A for the wonderful surprise. It is really appreciated. In Wonders this week, we will begin Unit 2 week 3. We have decided to stretch it out for two weeks since the kids will be missing two days of school in the next two weeks. Our spelling test will be on November 13. In math, we will be reviewing for our unit 2 assessment. Please have the kids keep studying their 2's and 5's multiplication tables. It will make it easier when we really get into the facts after Christmas. For the month of November and into December, we will be studying Native Americans. We will study in depth, the four major Native American groups. The Woodland, the Pueblo, the Plains, and the Northwest. I will give the kids a tribe assignment and they will be given Indian names. Most of the work will be done in class. We will study shelter, clothing, environment, eating habits, culture, different customs, and their special contributions to our modern day society. They will be responsible for doing a small research project in class. For a project at home, I would like the kids to create something hands-on to share with their classmates. This is one of the favorite themes of the year for the kids. Most of the kids in past classes, chose to make a scene using recycled materials from the woods. Leaves, twigs, birch bark, dirt, etc. We have had everything from dream catchers, hand sewn moccasins, tepees, long houses, Pueblo houses, dug out canoes, lacrosse sticks, Native American tools, beautiful scenes and pottery. If making a scene, please keep it desk size. This is a great time to get together with family and work on a project together. After all, November is the month of celebrating with family. I will be going over this project with the kids in school. I will be sharing lots of information and pictures of past projects. We have tons of resources in the classroom. There are also some great ideas on Pinterest. The kids in the past have really enjoyed this project and they learn so much from it. Please don't stress out. This should be a fun project. I would like to have the projects come in the week of November 30th. If you need further ideas or help, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm sure there are parents of kids whom I have had in the past years that can be a great resource too. I hope you have a great rest of the weekend. Enjoy the Patriot's game today. Can't wait for my Giants to face Brady and Tampa Bay Monday night. Enjoy the day everyone. Make sure you ration the candy! LOL! |
I Believe...Let the kids be kids. Every child has a strength. It is up to the teacher to find it or tap it so they can work to their highest potential. I tend to set the bar very high. Lifetime memories should be made in the classroom and at school. NBCS should be a place where kids enter happy and go home with a smile on their face. I want my kids getting up in the morning begging to go to school! Archives
