I hope everyone is having a nice Memorial Day weekend. We were in Maine for the weekend and had an awesome time.
I would like to thank everyone who attended the Presidential Reception. It was the best show yet! I was so proud of the kids and I won't say a tear or two wasn't shed. The speeches were awesome and the kids commitment was outstanding. It is a day that they will remember forever. I hope that everyone learned something from the kids that they didn't know before. We have had 7 kids recite the presidents in order and a few more are preparing. Again, these guys set the bar so high. The reception was fun and the snacks were delicious.
Thank you to all who attended the Community Meeting on Thursday. The kids and their buddies did a great job. I'm thinking Luke Bryant would like to see our presentation and what we did with his song.
We will be taking our final Aimsweb tests this week in Reading and Math. Tuesday morning and Thursday morning. On Wednesday morning we will have our annual Memorial Day celebration in the gym at 9:00. It is really a touching ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend.
We are all set for the whale watch. Let's hope the weather is good. According to their web site, they have been seeing lots of whales.
The Radsox will be taking their Unit 7 math test this week. I'm sure they will all do a great job.
For read aloud, we are reading Trumpet of the Swan and the kids are loving it.
We have all picked a state and have started our state unit. The kids will be responsible for decorating a box and putting two or three things from their state in it. Anything that can be connected to that state can go in the box. I would like to have the state boxes in by the 12th of June. We have talked in class about the details and things that can be put in the box. We will also be concentrating on all 50 capitals. We will have a quiz each Friday. We can do this!!!
We will also start our whale unit this week. We will research different whales and make classroom presentations.
Have a great week everyone.
The big day is coming up! Our presidential reception will be held in the music room on Friday, May 25, at 1:00. Please have the kids bring their costumes on a hanger or in a bag with their name on it. Please don't worry about make-up and powder for gray hair. After the kid's speeches, we will sample some foods of the presidents. make sure to sample the Presidential Punch and the Eisenhower clam dip. Everyone is welcome to attend. Our unit is finished and we are now in the process of writing our short speeches. The kids have learned so much about the history of our country and I am very proud of all of them. We have had 5 kids name the presidents in order and that is something I don't think I can even do. Congratulations to those guys. Amazing! Hope to see you all there on Friday.
The Whale Watch permission form will be coming home on Monday. Remember, you can only be a chaperone if you have been finger printed and you are on the updated list. Let's hope for a nice day for the kids and the whales. Sometimes the swells can be very rough and it isn't a trip for the sea weary! We will leave as close to 8:15 as possible and kids will need to be picked up at 4:30. Please don't forget to put a cell number on the permission form in case we need to get in touch with you.
Another bit of good news. We will be in the community meeting with our first grade buddies on Thursday, May 24th. We have been practicing very hard and I hope you can all come to see us. It is a nice way to wrap up the year with our buddies. I don't know what time we will be on, but the whole meeting usually takes about an hour. Hope you can join us.
We will be taking our final Aimsweb tests this week. We will follow the regular plans for Wonders reading and Wonders math. Our new spelling words are posted on the spelling page.
Have a good week everyone. See you on Thursday and Friday!!!
Happy Mother's Day to all. I hope you enjoy the day. The kids worked very hard on their gifts for you. Enjoy!
Thanks to all of the parents who came and helped us out for the whale presentation. It was very impressive and the kids loved it. We will surely have them back next year.
This week we will be working hard to finish up the presidential unit. We will be preparing for our speeches. The Reception will take place on Friday at 1:00 on May 25th in the music room.
We will continue with the same Wonders reading unit as last week. We will also be working with the same spelling words.
In math, we are working hard on fractions and comparing them to whole numbers. The kids are doing an excellent job on their fast math. They love doing it.
On Monday, we will start our final graded writing piece for the year. I will model it on Monday and then the kids will work on a rough draft and a final draft.
Last week, we worked with the Artist in Residence to repair the Native American dwellings up on the hill that were vandalized. Mark could not believe that the class constructed two tepees in less than an hour. Go Radsox. What a team.
It is hard to believe that we only have 28 days of school left.
Have a great week everybody.
I hope everyone had a great weekend. I had the opportunity to emcee the Talent Show and it was a great time. So much talent in our school. Congratulations to all of those who performed.
In reading this week, we will be on Unit 5-week 4. The new spelling words are posted on the spelling page. Our theme this week is citizenship.
In math, we continue to study our multiplication facts. We are also learning division and working on liquid measurement. Our fast math is coming along nicely. the kids love doing it for one minute.
On Monday afternoon, we will be repairing the Native American sculptures that we created up on the hill. Unfortunately, some of the sculptures were vandalized over a weekend. The kids were pretty upset. Mark will be with us to help with the repairs.
On Tuesday, the New England Aquarium will be coming with their giant inflatable whale. Thank you to the parents who signed up for the day.. Your training will begin at 9:15. Our class will come down to the gym at 1:00.
Our president unit is in full swing. The kids are learning so much about the presidents and United States history. Remember our reception will be held on the 25th of May. It will take place in the classroom at 1:00. After the speeches, we will sample some of the presidents favorite foods. The presidential punch is delicious. We hope to see you there. Remember kids should be looking for an outfit to dress as their president. Please use your resources and don't go out and spend a lot of money. We have talked about the different outfits in class. Modern day presidents can wear a white shirt with a tie.
Thanks to all of you who pledged for Jump Rope for Heart. The kids had a blast.
Have a great week everyone!
Let the kids be kids. Every child has a strength. It is up to the teacher to find it or tap it so they can work to their highest potential. I tend to set the bar very high. Lifetime memories should be made in the classroom and at school. NBCS should be a place where kids enter happy and go home with a smile on their face. I want my kids getting up in the morning begging to go to school!
