Good morning everyone. It is hard to believe that it is the last day of January. It is zero degrees up here on the Mud Hill.
Our class meeting on Friday was awesome. I love it when the kids are all together. We do have a lot of fun and we get so much accomplished. There is snow in the forecast for this week and it may be a remote day on Tuesday. if that happens, we will have a morning meeting for reading, and an afternoon meeting for math. I will let you know the times the night before or the morning of. We have completed our Aimsweb assessmnets for the winter. The kids made some nice gains even though they are only in school two days a week. We will take them again in the spring. We finished our valentine birds for the ceiling and the room is all decorated for Valentine's Day. We will have our parties on Wednesdat the 10th and Thursday the 11th. I will be treating the kids to ice cream sundaes. They all liked that idea. The kids may make their valentines at home. I will send home a class list on Monday and Tuesday. Please have the kids make a decorative box or bag or any container at home to bring in for their own valentines. If anyone needs paper, just have the kids ask and I will send it home. The kids usually like to get creative with their boxes. For reading Wonders this week, we will tackle Unit 4 week 1. The genre is non fiction. The spelling words are listed on the spelling page. We will have our test on Friday morning in zoom class. In math, we continue to work on polygons, area, perimeter and measurement. Please have the kids keep studying their 3's, 4's, and 5's tables. We enjoy a minute of fast math everyday. In science this week, we will be constructing houses out of paper and then we will see how they stand up to a windstorm. If the first house doesn't stand, we get to play engineers and go back to the drawing board and improve the second one. This is a fun activity. It is time to start thinking about the presidents. This is a huge unit in Mr. Mud's third grade. I will introduce the presidents this week. The kids will pick a president of their interest and research them and write a speech. We will have our own books and tons of resources in class. Most of the work will be done in class. I will scale it back a little because it will be impossible to cover the whole unit with the kids only coming to school two days a week. This is a really fun unit. it is actually a mini history course. The kids will learn so much. You will be amazed! They may research all they want at home. We continue to enjoy our read aloud series.."Sideways Stories from Wayside School". There are four books in the series. The kids continue to do a great job. Please have them bring back their spelling tests on Monday and Tuesday. Have a great rest of the weekend everyone. No NFL football today, only the Hula Bowl with college teams. Stay warm, safe and healthy. Keep up the good work. Good Sunday morning everyone. The wind sounds like a freight train coming through up here on the Mud Hill. There is no snow in sight. So sad!
We have been busy all week tearing the house apart looking for pictures of my dad dressed up in his Marine garb. We finally found the album I was looking for. My hometown is New York is doing a program through the art department at the high school. They are hanging flags of deceased veterans from all of the armed forces. They will put them on the main streets of the city. I can now complete the application and send in the proper paper work. Can't wait to see the flag when it is completed. This week we will be focusing on the Aimsweb reading and math tests. We will test Monday through Thursday. The test will take place at 10:00 and will take about 90 minutes. Please remind the kids to do their best work. Try to have them eat something before they come to school and try to have them get a good night's rest. I know they will do their best. We will not be doing Wonders reading this week. The spelling words will also look a little different. They are posted on the spelling page. We will be starting our first lengthy formal writing assignment. This will take a few days to complete. It will be an opinion writing piece. In math, we will continue on measurement, area and perimeter. Please have the kids keep studying their 3's and 4's times tables. We will be finishing up our weather unit also. The kids are experts on climate all around the world. The kids continue to do a great job on their work in and out of the classroom. I am amazed at the amount of work that we can get done in each cohort. We are back to a full class in each cohort. We had a great meeting on Friday morning. The kids get along so well and we really have a lot of fun in the class meeting. The other teachers at school are always telling us how well the kids in my class get along. They play well together and take care of each other. I am so proud of them. Today looks like a great day for football. I can't wait to see who will go to the Super Bowl. I would love to see Tampa Bay vs. Kansas City. Have a good rest of the weekend. Don't forget to bring in your work and your spelling tests. See you soon. Happy Sunday everyone. The rain has washed almost all of the snow away here on the Mud Hill. So sad! Where is the snow? We need a good snowstorm!
We had a great week in school. We accomplished so much. Our zoom class was very successful and the kids did an awesome job as usual. In reading Wonders this week, we will be on Unit 3- week 5. We are in the middle of our weather unit for science. The kids are enjoying all the hands-on activities that go along with the unit. They are getting to be experts at identifying clouds. This is our week for exchanging library books. Most of the kids have brought their books in. If not, please have them return on Monday and Tuesday. We have started the read aloud series, "Sideways Stories From Wayside School". The kids are really enjoying it. We watch the videos while we eat lunch. We are enjoying the antics of Sam the Snowman. Teddy has sent him down from the North Pole. He is not as mischievous as Teddy was, but he keeps us on our toes. The kids made some really heartfelt cards for our adoptive Godparents. They were overjoyed when they received them. Keep up the wonderful work everyone. You continue to amaze me. Have a great week. Stay safe and healthy. Enjoy the Chiefs game today if you are watching football. We are off to the beach to check it out. Dunkin Donuts first of course! Happy weekend everyone. What a beautiful Sunday. Great day for a hike or anything outdoors.
We had a great first week back to school after Christmas vacation. It's always tough to come back after the Christmas break. The kids did great! We had an awesome Zoom class on Friday. The kids were so excited to share their favorite gifts. Lots of good conversation, positive comments and interaction. I really enjoyed it. We are stretching out Wonders 3-4 for another week. That way we can finish our weather unit in science and get to some other stuff. The kids are getting to be experts at the different types of clouds. We will do some more observing this week. I am very impressed at how the kids are doing on their multiplication facts. They have done amazing on the 2's, 5's and 10's. Now we will move on to 3's and 4's. We will be starting a new math activity this week called "Fast Math". The kids get one minute to complete a certain multiplication table.(12 problems). We start with the 1's and go up to the 12's. If they complete the same problems of the same table two days in a row with one hundred percent, they get to move on. It is not a competition, but a race against themselves. The kids last year loved doing it. We are at the end of unit three in math, and we will take our assessment on Wednesday and Thursday. The kids are more than ready. Next, it is on to measurement. I just went to school and picked up a delivery from our "Godparents". Mr. and Mrs. Bergen have been bringing us all kinds of snacks and school supplies since September. They are so good to us. I will have the kids make thank you cards for them this week. Their kids are all grown up, and they just love to give back to my kids. If Mud's Munchkins forget a snack or need some more to eat we have got it covered. We also have tons of water. I am still enjoying and reaping the benefits of all the wonderful Christmas gifts. The food, the candles, the ornaments, the blankets and the gift cards. Thank you again so much. I am very lucky. Stay healthy and safe everyone. We want to stay in school. I need to be in a classroom setting with my kids. I feel that they need to be there too! Keep up the good work. Have a great day everyone. Enjoy whatever you are going to do today. Hello everyone. Happy January. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break. I know I did. I am now fully energized once again and ready to start off the new year in school with a bang. I Believe...Let the kids be kids. Every child has a strength. It is up to the teacher to find it or tap it so they can work to their highest potential. I tend to set the bar very high. Lifetime memories should be made in the classroom and at school. NBCS should be a place where kids enter happy and go home with a smile on their face. I want my kids getting up in the morning begging to go to school! Archives
