Happy Memorial Day to all. We just got back from a quick trip to New York. We were able to tour Angry Orchard, which is about 35 minutes from my hometown of Port Jervis, NY. We also visited with friends and relatives.
Thank you to all who came to the Presidential Reception. It was the biggest turnout ever. I was so very very proud of the kids. They did an outstanding job. Their speeches and their costumes were just top notch. They will take this president and history knowledge with them and remember it for the rest of their lives! This week is a busy one for us. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be taking the Aimsweb assessment tests. Tuesday will be reading and Wednesday will be math. Please encourage the kids to do their best. I know they will. On Wednesday, the New England Aquarium will be presenting their whale program to the third graders. This is the second year for us. They did an excellent job last year and so we had them come back. Thank you to the volunteers that are coming to get trained and to help out. Thursday is our Memorial Day Program in the gym. Please have the kids try to wear red, white or blue. This is a very popular and solemn presentation for us. There is always a big turnout. For reading this week in Wonders, we will be continuing last week's story. The testing will take up most of our mornings. I will have a special list of spelling words this week. They will be posted on the spelling page. In math, we will be continuing to work in unit 7. Fractions are the main focus. The kids are doing great. Keep up the practice for the multiplication facts. We will be starting our state theme this week. The kids can get started on learning the capitals. We will have a capital test every Friday til the end of school. I have a lot of tricks to help the kids remember some of them. I will tell the kids more about their state boxes this week also. They will be responsible for decorating the outside of their state box and then finding three things from their state to put in the box. We will also be starting our study of whales to get prepared for pour whale watch which will be a week from this Friday. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather. I'll take chilly, just no rain please. The captain is very good at keeping us updated the week of the trip. If he feels the conditions are not safe, he will not take the kids out. This happened to us last year. We did have to reschedule. Have a great week everyone. Enjoy the beautiful weather. Happy weekend everyone. Finally some beautiful weather where you could be outside. Enjoy the sun until it disappears again.
On Friday, May 24, we will hold our Presidential Reception in the library. The ceremony will start at 1:00. The kids should bring in their costumes or clothes to change in. We will get changed in the classroom. I would love some spare hands to help the kids get ready. If anyone is available around 12:30, that would be great. The presidents will speak in order. After the speeches, we will return to the classroom for some presidential snacks. Everyone is invited to attend. I do have some presidential clothes packed away if anyone is desperate. If your child is portraying a modern president, then a white shirt and tie will be perfect. I also have some bow ties for those in need. I hope to see you on Friday. The kids have learned so much about presidents and the history of our country. I am blown away. In Wonders this week, we will be doing Unit 5, week 5. The genre will be Expository Text. The spelling words are posted on the spelling page. In math, we will be taking our Unit 6 assessment and moving onto Unit 7. Please keep practicing those multiplication facts. All of the kids have chosen a state and we all have a state book. The kids have made their state flags which will be hanging up in the classroom. For a final project for the year, I will be asking the kids to decorate a box fitting for their state, and then I would like them to find at least three things to put in their box from the specific state. Some ideas are... state quarters, t-shirts, hats, flowers or fruits, canned goods or anything manufactured in that state, license plates, rocks or shells, stuffed animals, pictures, etc. Last year, I stepped in and out of the New York box! Ha! The kids will make a small presentation to their classmates. The Whale Watch permission slip will be coming home this week. One parent per child is good for this year. Please hope for a nice day and calm seas. There are different solutions to seasickness if you are prone to that. Sometimes the sea can get pretty rough 30 miles out! We will leave school at 8:15 and return around 4:30 according to the traffic. On the 29th of May, the New England Aquarium will be coming out to do a whale program with the third graders. They will also bring a blow-up life size whale. The kids loved the program last year. We will also be doing the last Aimsweb tests for the year. That will be in reading and math. As the school year comes to a close, the dates for end of the year things start filling in the calendar. It is hard to believe that there are only 30 days of school left.! Have a wonderful week everyone. I hope everyone had a great weekend and a wonderful Mother's Day. We had a great brunch at the Black Forest Cafe and then drove up to Maine for the day.
Please don not forget to take the report card survey. I think it is up for one more week. Thank you in advance. On Monday, it will be our last day of SAS Testing. This will be the writing part of the test and it will take about two hours. The kids have been doing a great job maintaining their positive attitudes. We will be back to a regular routine on Tuesday. The new spelling words are posted on the spelling page. Nine more presidents to go and then we will be preparing our speeches for the big day on May 24th. Have a great week everyone. I think we will need our jackets and our umbrellas. Here is the link for the parent report card survey. Please take a few minutes and fill it out. It will be up for two weeks. Thank you!

The weather is not cooperating! We had company from New York and did some fun things with them. This week we will begin our testing for SAS. Our first will be on Tuesday. It will be a Language Arts test. All of test times are 8:10-9:30. Except for the writing next Monday which will be 8:30 to 10:30. Please encourage the kids to do their best. Have them get a good night's sleep and make sure they have something to eat before they leave the house. We have talked in class about how important it is to do their best work. I know they will. I told the kids to have a positive attitude and just to do their best. We will not be starting a new Unit in Wonders this week. We will also be working on the same spelling words as last week. The test is very challenging and the kids will be pooped! Thank you to all who volunteered to bring in snacks. The kids will really appreciate it. We are just about to the end of our president unit. Then we will work on our speeches. We have started to work on our state flags. They are coming out great. Don't forget to check out our Hall of Presidents. They are really awesome. Have a great week everyone. Let's hope for some nice spring weather! |
I Believe...Let the kids be kids. Every child has a strength. It is up to the teacher to find it or tap it so they can work to their highest potential. I tend to set the bar very high. Lifetime memories should be made in the classroom and at school. NBCS should be a place where kids enter happy and go home with a smile on their face. I want my kids getting up in the morning begging to go to school! Archives
