What a rainy messy day. Cam and his dad are here finishing up some new windows. We are staining the finish boards in the house because it is so cold out. There is a long standing joke about rain at the Mud's house when Jim comes to do work. Every time except one day!
We are having our parade and Halloween party on Wednesday at one o'clock. Parents, feel free to come in and help out. You can even parade with us if you want to. The parade will start at one and the party will follow. Please make sure that the kid's costumes are school appropriate. No weapons please. We are very lucky here that the Halloween tradition still continues. The food and party supplies are all taken care of. Thank you everyone who contributed! On Wednesday night, please feel free to come up to the house. I will give directions to the kids and their homework for the night is to find the house. Their reward will be a big bag of candy. We will also have doughnuts, cider, bread, and homemade chili. Stop in to say hello. If you need to be earlier or later than the scheduled trick or treat time, that is okay. Our driveway is long and dark, so be prepared. In Wonders reading this week we will be on Unit 2, week 2. The spelling words can be found on the spelling page on this site. In math we are finishing up Unit 2 and we will soon take our Unit 2 assessment. We are working very hard at borrowing in subtraction and carrying in addition. Kids should be memorizing their 2's and 3's multiplication facts. In Science we will be starting a weather unit with some fun experiments. In Social Studies, we will continue to compare New Boston to other towns and cities around the country. The month of November, we will be doing a Native American Unit. I will be asking the kids to do a handmade project for the end of the month. The kids usually like to create an Indian scene. There are other things to do also. We will talk about it in class. In the past, kids have made canoes, lacrosse sticks, bow and arrows, pottery, baskets, clay houses, longhouses, tepees, igloos, headdresses, dream catchers, totem poles, sand paintings, moccasins, clothing, and even food. The kids will be able to get a better idea when they go to the Warner Indian Museum. We will be doing a lot of projects in class and creating a huge folder. We will study the four main groups of Native Americans that were in the United States. The Northeast, Plains, Southwest, and Northwest. This unit is usually a big hit with the kids. When the projects are completed, we will pick a date and have our own museum in the classroom. We will invite other classes and family and friends. We are working hard on the new report card and they are almost perfected. The kids and myself are learning about the new grading system everyday. They are understanding that we learn from our mistakes and it is okay to get something wrong. As long as we do our best work. We are working very hard to proofread our work before we hand it in. Have a great week everyone. I hope everyone is having a great weekend. You all deserve it after the busy Friday we had.
That was the most successful Michaelmas Fair for us. The crafts were amazing this year. Word on the street has it that the crafts were the best yet. I was so proud of the kids. What a great learning experience for all involved. Thank you all for the awesome support you gave the kids over the last few months. The kids really, "rocked it out"! We will now try and give back some of our money back to the community, the school, and for our own class. The Warner Indian Museum will be paid for out of our Michaelmas Account. We will pay for the chaperones and the buses also. The kids' whale watch will be paid for too! We will give a free book of choice to the third graders at the PTA Book Fair, and we will give to a charity in need or whatever else might come up during the year. Thank you room moms and room dads, grandparents, family members and friends. Our profit was astonishing! The kids can be very proud of themselves. We can all take a deep breath and relax for awhile. Next up will be the Halloween party and parade. I think we are all set with food and drinks already. Our room parents are amazing! We will get back to normalcy this week. Wonders reading will be starting in Unit 2 week 1 and we continue unit 2 in math. I will be sending home permission slips to be signed for the Karate School that will be visiting us on Thursday. Mr. Standon is a friend of mine and he is an amazing instructor. The lesson will be tied in with discipline and Halloween safety. The kids will even get to break a board if their permission slip is signed.(shhhh)! We will also have our visit with the New Boston Fire Department. They do such a great job with the kids. After our meeting with them we will write them thank you letters. Have a great week everybody. Go Sox, Go Pats, Go Celts!!! I hope everyone had a good weekend. We just got back from a weekend in Portland, Maine. It was beautiful up there.
Friday night, the third grade team went Michaelmas shopping for all of the raffle prizes. We got most of the things that the kids were interested in. We will have over 50 prizes to raffle off. Those tickets will be 5 for a dollar. On the dollar ticket table we will have a tablet, a hover board and a Patriot's package for prizes. Someone will be able to win those. Please have the kids bring in a sample of their craft at the beginning of the week so we can price them. The kids should be thinking of a creative way to display their crafts on Friday. Baskets, nice cloth, tree branch in a bucket for hanging ornaments, cookie sheet for magnets, etc. Please have the kids package their baked goodies in bags. We will try to keep the prices at quarter increments. That way it will be easier to make change. Please list the ingredients in the baked goodie also. The kids will need help making change when the customers start waving bills at them. It is very hectic the first half hour until we get into the groove. I am trying to get some jars for the kids so they can put their money into it. I will give them change first thing. Then the adults will collect the big bills and give them to me or hold onto them. The kids will come in with their goods on Friday morning, we will take attendance and head down to the gym to set up. We will set up the tables on Thursday night. Remember they only have a space about the size of their desk top. When the kids sell out, we will spread out Mrs. Mud's crafts to sell. I still can't see any tables in my house. Crafts for the kids everywhere! At 11:00 we will clean up and head back to the classroom for our feast. If you need to heat up any food, I'm sure the kitchen will accommodate and we can plug in crock pots in the classroom. We will have our feast at 11:30. The kids will go out to recess and then when they come back in we will count our nmoney as a class and then head back to the gym for picking the lucky winners of the raffle prizes. The kids will then deliver. Hopefully we will have a few winners in our class. Mrs. Mud will be manning the raffle table all morning. She welcomes help. The little ones always need help filling out the tickets. If you have any questions about Michaelmas on Friday please don't hesitate to ask. Let the fun begin. Our spelling words are different this week. They are posted on the spelling page. We will have our test on Thursday. We finished our first unit math test and the kids did very well. This week Michaelmas will be our first priority. Posters, pricing and learning to make change. The kids are very excited. They have been writing about the big day for awhile. If you can give a couple hours on Friday, that would be great. We will need lots of help in the morning and with the feast at lunch time. Thank you for filling up the supply list so fast. We are very lucky!! Have a great week everyone. I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I got a chance to go to the Warner Fall Festival and hang out with the relatives. It was a fun day.
We had another great week in school. The kids are doing a great job in their journals and on their spelling tests. We also love Math. Please have the kids study their multiplication facts each night for a few minutes. They can make some flashcards or use their triangle fact pieces to study. We talked about memorizing the doubles first, like 4x4, 8x8, 6x6, etc. If the kids start now, it will be a lot easier for them mid year. We will take our first Unit Math test this week. I think the kids are all ready for it. We enjoy Math and figuring out different strategies to share with each other. We are almost finished with the "BFG". We did some interesting calculations. Ask the kids about the experiment. Reading Wonders will be Unit 1, week 5 this week. Hopefully the kids are doing their reading each night at home. We are really doing awesome on Reading Counts tests! The new spelling words are posted on the Spelling page and the kids brought them home on Friday. We enjoy our first grade buddies every Friday afternoon. This class is so awesome with their buddies!! We really have fun. It is hard to believe that Michaelmas Fair is two weeks away. Hopefully everyone has found a craft to work on by now. Some of the ideas sound great. The third grade team will be going shopping this Friday night to get prizes for the raffle table. The kids and I will make a list. We usually get about 50 prizes for the 5 for a dollar table, and three big prizes where tickets will be a dollar each. I will be sending home everyone's e-mails so Meredith and Leah can put up a Sign-Up Genius. Madison's dad has offered to cook our turkey. We will need all the fixings for dinner, (stuffing, rolls, butter, gravy, mashed potatoes and a veggie) drinks, dessert, and paper goods. I will let the room moms know before they put it out to you guys. Thank you in advance. Have a good week everyone. |
I Believe...Let the kids be kids. Every child has a strength. It is up to the teacher to find it or tap it so they can work to their highest potential. I tend to set the bar very high. Lifetime memories should be made in the classroom and at school. NBCS should be a place where kids enter happy and go home with a smile on their face. I want my kids getting up in the morning begging to go to school! Archives
