Happy weekend everyone. It is only 25 degrees up here on the Mud Hill. It looks to be a very nice day. More outside work. Leaves, leaves and more leaves. Worked on blowing leaves four hours yesterday.
Halloween was awesome. Thanks for finding the house and bringing the kids up. I'm so glad the kids had the parade and trick or treating. We are into our Native American unit. We started with the Woodland Indians. The kids are really into the unit. We have talked about options for their projects and we have seen pictures of past projects. It sounds like some of the kids have ideas already. Remember the projects will be due on the 29th of November. If you still need an idea, let me know. Our field trip to the museum will be on the 19th of November. I will be sending home the permission slips on Thursday. This week we will venture away from Wonders' spelling words and have a special list of 12 words related to Native Americans. We will have a test on Friday. The words are posted on the spelling page of this site. In math, we are learning about division and concentrating on number stories. We are also practicing borrowing and carrying. We have finished all of the lower case cursive letters and we are now learning to write our first names in cursive. We already have kids using cursive in their journals. I really applaud their efforts. The kids are so excited about cursive. In science we are learning about fossils. This week we will find out if any of us would have been able to outrun a dinosaur! Remember, the kids will have no school on Thursday because of Veteran's Day. We will be doing a special project in class for Veterans also. Enjoy the Patriot's game today and enjoy the rest of the weekend. Have a wonderful week! Happy rainy weekend everyone. Looks like it might clear up for this evening's tricks or treats. The kids all have a map to find my house. Feel free to come up, but don't feel you have to if it doesn't fit into your schedule. I have a bag of stuff for the kids and it will be set up on the porch. I will be here. There is a mailbox that says 158 on Lull Rd. I will have a balloon attached to the mailbox. Enter the tarred drive and you will see an a-frame house, turn right and come up the dirt drive and my house is at the top of the hill. Tan house with red shutters. be careful in the driveway, it is dark and narrow. Once you get up to the house, there is a turn around and lots of grass to turn around on. Have fun and be safe whatever your plans are.
Halloween at school on Friday was amazing. The kids did a great job and there costumes were so creative and fun. The kids had a ball. We basically snacked all day while working and we all enjoyed the parade. What a turnout! Thank you again for the donations and the wonderful snacks. The kids really appreciated it and I loved seeing the kids having fun. This week in Wonders, our genre will be expository text(a real true story about voting). The spelling words are the hardest yet and they are posted on the spelling page of this website. We just finished our unit 2 math test and the kids did a great job. Now is the time to start practicing those multiplication facts. We will be starting minute math next week. In science, we are in the middle of our animal unit and the kids are really enjoying that. This week, we will begin our Native American unit. A favorite with the kids every year. We will study four groups of Native Americans and talk about their shelters, their foods, their customs, their dress, their practices and basically what they contributed to our modern day society. We will be doing lots of research in class. The kids will be introduced to their first long term project that they will complete at home with the help of any family members. They will do a hands-on project(no bigger than desk size please) to share with classmates and other classes. There are numerous possibilities and we will talk about all of them in class. In the past, we have had Indian scenes, homemade moccasins, different types of shelters, dream catchers, clay figures, homemade lacrosse sticks, just to name a few. The most popular in the past have been Indian scenes placed in a box with recycled materials. Longhouses are very popular and so are tepees. Be creative and think out of the box. Remember to use materials from nature. I will send home more information as we go along and I will share past projects with the kids. Make it fun and family orientated. Please do not stress out. The projects will be due on the 29th of November, the day we come back from Thanksgiving break. I can't wait to see all of the ideas and hear the kids report on their project. If you have any questions, or need direction, please text or give a shout out. Here are some important dates for this month. November 4-picture retake day November 11-Veteran's Day-No School November 19-Field Trip to Warner Indian Museum November 24-Early Release for Thanksgiving-12:00 November 25-28-Thanksgiving break November 29-Projects due The sun just came out!!! Enjoy the game today and have fun trick or treating. Hopefully we will see you tonight for a quick stop. Stay healthy and be safe. Have a great week everyone. Happy weekend everyone. I hope everyone is enjoying the last few days of October. I have a lot of leaf blowing to do and a lot of raking. Still have leaves to fall from the trees yet.
This week in Wonders, we will be on Unit 2-week 2. Our story will be historical fiction. The spelling words for this week are posted on the spelling page of this site. We will have our test on Friday. In math we will be finishing up unit 2. We are working hard on two-step number stories and getting into our multiplication facts. We just started our first science unit on animals. We went on a fossil dig on Friday and the kids had fun with it. In social studies, we continue to discuss map skills and are learning about the continents and different countries and states. Our Native American unit will be coming up in November. We will learn about the four major groups of Indians in the United States. The kids will be given a name and a certain tribe. They will be doing a hands-on project at home. More on that later. On Friday we will have our Halloween parade and party. The parade plans have been changed, and the whole school will now be marching downtown around the gazebo. The kids are very excited about that. If anyone would be willing to make something for the party, please let me know. I will buy pizza for the kids. If anyone would like to bring in treats for the kids, you may do so. I am thinking maybe a vegetable platter to go along with the pizza and a few desserts. I will also get drinks. Please remember to keep the costumes for the kids school appropriate. We are one of the very few schools that still celebrate Halloween. Kids may come dressed in the morning because the parade is at 9:00. So nice to have the parade back. The Patriots are doing a great job in the game. It is looking good for them. Have a great week everyone. Enjoy this beautiful Sunday. I hope everyone is having a great weekend. What a beautiful day it was yesterday. Today looks like another nice one.
Our Michaelmas Faire was a huge success thanks to all of you. The kids did an amazing job. So many nice compliments from other classes and teachers. WE made a little over 6,000 dollars. We will now be able to fund our Native American field trip to the Warner Indian Museum and pay for the buses too. We will give each child in the third grade money for a free book at the book fair. We will also donate to the Community Church at Thanksgiving and Christmas. The money will go towards the Whale Watch (working on this, so keep your fingers crossed) and any other cause that we feel is worthy during the year. We like to give back, since everyone is involved in the Michaelmas Faire. Thank you again everyone for making this special day such a huge success for the kids. It's a day in third grade that they will always remember. It is times like this when I am missing my Mom. We used to pack up a bunch of the kids crafts and send them to her in New York. She looked so forward to seeing what the kids made. She and my Dad used to attend the fair when they lived in Hooksett. Sadly, she passed away 11 months ago, so that tradition is no more. This week in Wonders we will be starting Unit 2 week 1. Our genre will be Folktales. The new spelling words are posted on this site on the spelling page. In math, we are working on division and multiplication and word problems. Kids are doing a great job. This week we will have our Fire Safety lesson on Thursday at 1:00. Have a great rest of the weekend everyone. Enjoy the Patriots at 1:00. Halloween is next, right around the corner. Happy weekend everyone. I hope you all enjoy your Sunday. We have company from New York and we have been busy all weekend.
The big day is Friday. Michaelmas will take place outside from 8;30-11:30. The kids have been bringing in their crafts to show and we are all impressed. Nice work everyone. On Monday we will talk about display advertising. How can we "pretty up" our crafts? Place mat, tablecloth, basket, mini tree to display necklaces or ornaments. These are just a few ideas. I would like all of the projects in by Thursday at the latest. Wednesday would be awesome. That way we can price everything as a class. I have one whole day volunteer and I will need one more. Or if parents can take two hour shifts that would be great too. Remember you may all come to shop and help out the kids. The third grade has their own bank account. We use the money for field trips, buses, local charities, Book Fair and people who are in need of help. We love giving back. Thank you all for being so supportive and doing such a great job with the kids on their crafts. Hope to see you on Friday. We just finished our first unit one math test. The kids did a great job. Now it is on to unit two. You should have received the unit 2 in backpacks Thursday night. We will be doing other reading things this week and we will not follow the Wonders format. Lots of Michaelmas stuff to attend to. We are working hard at cursive and the kids are doing a great job. We will keep practicing. Remember, we do have school on Monday. We will be talking about Columbus and doing a whole folder on him. Have a great rest of the weekend everyone. Enjoy the game if you are watching today. Happy October everyone. I can't believe we are in the month of October already. It is cool and cloudy up here on the Mud Hill. We are taking out all of the Halloween decorations and that means I have work to do outside! I am glad the game is on tonight.
Please keep in mind that Michaelmas is right around the corner on Friday, October 15th. It sounds like everyone is all set for crafts according to the kids. The nurse gave the okay to have baked goods along with the crafts if you choose to do so. Please make sure they are labeled with ingredients. The sixth graders love the baked goods. The third grade team went shopping Friday night and purchased all of the raffle prizes. This year for the two big prizes, we have a snowboard and a tablet. I would like to have two parent volunteers to work with us most of the day to help with set up, money, and dismantling. We are now allowed to let parents come and shop if you would like to. If you haven't experienced Michaelmas yet, it is something to see. Always a favorite day with the kids. Please keep your fingers crossed for nice weather. This week in Wonders, we are doing Expository Text. The spelling words are on the spelling page of this site. They are tricky words this week. In math, we are getting introduced to division and multiplication. We are also doing word problems. I think math is our favorite subject. Cursive is coming along nicely. the kids are really good at it. In social studies, we are getting familiar with all kinds of maps. We are starting to recognize our countries, states and continents. Mr. and Mrs. Bergen made a delivery for the kids on Friday. We call them the "Godparents". They have adopted my class and they generously provide snacks for the kids monthly. I will have the kids make cards for them, which they just love to receive. Stay healthy and be safe. The kids are doing an amazing. Enjoy the game tonight. Have a great week everyone. Happy Sunday everyone. I hope you all are enjoying this much cooler and fresher air. Yesterday was beautiful and it looks like today is going to be great also.
Please remember that there is no school on Friday. It will be a workshop day for teachers. I can't believe we are moving into October! Thank you again for the generous support you gave us for the Fun Run. We reached our goal of 20,000 dollars. Our run on Friday was so much fun and our "Pie in the face" challenge was a riot. The kids had a blast. We retained our first place title for six days. We have some very special "dress days" coming up on Fridays in October as rewards. The whole school will also receive an ice cream party. In reading this week, we will be working on a biography story. Our spelling test this week will be on Thursday because of no school on Friday. Our new words are listed on the spelling page of this website. In math, we are working on data collection and making bar graphs. We continue to review addition and subtraction. In our classroom, we are working on collecting 75 gold coins for an in class root beer float party. We earn coins by doing good deeds, bringing back our homework and getting compliments from other school members. We are doing a great job. We are getting used to logging onto the computers. We all got on Friday and went into IXL which the kids loved. IXL is a program that is totally independent where the kids work at their own pace. It has all of the subjects. Kids can earn badges and rewards. We did math. The kids will be able to access that at home too. Please remember that Michaelmas is on October 15. It sounds like the kids have gotten a good start on their crafts. It sounds like everyone has some great ideas in the making. Mrs. Mud is finishing up another project right at this moment. Have a good Sunday everyone and have a great week ahead. Game time 1:00!!! Go Pats! Happy weekend everyone. Today is Sunday the 19th and it is beautiful! A perfect day for a hike, a bike ride, a trip to the beach or the Patriot's game at 1:00.
We had a great first full week of school. We are now into a routine and the kids are getting adjusted very nicely. We all did a great job on our first formal spelling test. Mrs. Mud has three projects going. I will not see the dining room table until October 14th!! This week on Monday and Tuesday, we will take our Aimsweb assessment. This assessment is given three times a year. The kids are assessed in math and reading. Our time is 8:10-9:30. Please encourage the kids to do their best. I know they will. We continue to be in first place in the Fun Run challenge. Thank you so much for the support. This weekend there is a special challenge for a big bonus prize. The Dunking Doughnuts are awesome. Get out there and enjoy this beautiful day. Have a great rest of the weekend. Good morning all. Happy Sunday. What a beautiful weekend to be outside.
We had a great week of school last week. We are getting into the routine of the daily agenda and the kids are ready for a great year. The Christmas tree planting was such a treat. The kids were so surprised to learn that they will be able to come back in about 5 years and they can tag a tree and cut it to take home for their own enjoyment. Om Monday we will finally get to have music. All of our specials are 10:35-11:15. We have a special everyday. I hope everyone got a chance to review the FUN RUN protocol. I will be sending home some information a couple of times a week until the big event on the 24th. The PTA does so many wonderful things for us and our school. This week in Wonders, we will be on Unit 1-week 2. Our genre will be realistic fiction. We will have new vocabulary words and work with them all week. The new spelling words are listed here on the spelling page under MORE. We will have a practice test on Monday and then the real spelling test on Friday. We finally got started in our math journals, because they were just delivered to us. We are getting familiar with numbers and the number grid. We are reviewing addition and subtraction. This week we will probably start our home links for homework. Please remember to not stress out over homework. If you have a hard time with it, just jot me a note and I will take care of it in class. We will be able to go to the Native American Museum in November. Unfortunately we will not be able to take parents this year. We are also going to set a date for the Michaelmas Faire this week. The fair will take place outside. I am not sure of the parent volunteer procedure yet. I will let you know so much more information on Back To School Night. Mrs. Mud and my sister-in-law are crafting at the dining room table right now. They have three craft projects started. They will make crafts and donate them to the kids to sell. Both of them are so crafty and their crafts are really something to see. Hopefully the kids are getting some ideas. I will share some ideas with the kids this week. I have tone of craft books. Please don't forget that Pinterest and Michaels are great resources for some ideas. I look forward to seeing all of you on the 21st at Back To School Night. Please have your questions ready. Have a great day everyone. Enjoy your Sunday. I am looking forward to our first full week of school. Please stay healthy and safe. Happy Labor Day everyone. I hope you are all enjoying the unofficial last long weekend of the summer. I went to Boston yesterday and spent Saturday at Canobie Lake.
This week we will try to get into a more regular routine with our school day. The first three days last week, we spent a lot of time getting to know each other and going over all the rules and protocols for the new school year. Remember that all the important news or "blasts" during the week will come through Bloomz. Please utilize that app to contact me and I will try to get right back to you. It's a great mode of communication, especially when you have an after thought or need a change of plans. We will have a Back To School Night on September 21. I can't wait to meet all of you. This will be for adults only and I will go over all the rules and expectations for the year. We have a new class name. I think Mr. Mud's Dunking Doughnuts is very appropriate. I am never without a DD coffee and I get the kids munchkins every Friday. LOL! We will be talking about the Booster Fun Run that the PTA is sponsoring this month. There will be information coming home as to how you can participate. It really sounds like fun and the kids are going to love it. On Tuesday, we will be starting our reading program. Wonders is the name of the program and the kids are all familiar with it. We will work with the program every week and that is where the spelling words will come from. Every Friday, we will have a comprehension test and a vocabulary test on the main story. In the next couple of weeks Wonders will be set up on the computer and the kids will be able to access it at home. The new spelling words will be listed on this website on the spelling page every Sunday. We will also be starting Reading Counts this week. When the kids complete five passed quizzes in a row, they earn a prize. Our morning work routine will usually include a math paper, an oral language paper, a spelling assignment, and a Grow paper which entails kids reading maps and researching different things in Social Studies. Our first hour in the morning is usually independent work time. The kids will also be starting their journal writing. This is a passion of mine. They will write in their journals daily. You will want to save these for years to come. Our first Wonders story in reading this week will be "Wolf". The genre is fantasy. We will also be starting the Everyday math program. We will be concentrating on subtraction facts and addition facts. It is also never too late to start memorizing those multiplication facts! Have a great rest of the day everyone. Remember if you have any questions, you can text me through Bloomz. Enjoy the beautiful weather. I see leaves changing already up here on the Mud Hill. I will see everyone tomorrow morning. |
I Believe...Let the kids be kids. Every child has a strength. It is up to the teacher to find it or tap it so they can work to their highest potential. I tend to set the bar very high. Lifetime memories should be made in the classroom and at school. NBCS should be a place where kids enter happy and go home with a smile on their face. I want my kids getting up in the morning begging to go to school! Archives
